Job Type: Full-time
Experience Level: Senior (5–10 years)
Reports To: CTO

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Infrastructure/Cloud Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining robust, scalable backend systems and cloud infrastructure. You'll play a critical part in driving the architecture and performance of our backend services, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and security.

We’re looking for someone with deep expertise in cloud platforms—especially Amazon Web Services (AWS)—and modern backend development. You should be comfortable navigating complex systems, mentoring others, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Development: Architect and develop scalable, maintainable backend systems using modern frameworks, with a strong emphasis on automation and repeatability.
  • Infrastructure as Code & Cloud Architecture: Own and expand our infrastructure-as-code ecosystem. All infrastructure is deployed and versioned using IaC tools. Lead backend deployment and cloud infrastructure efforts on AWS using services like S3, Lambda, ECS/EKS, IAM, and CDK/Terraform/CloudFormation. Champion infrastructure best practices grounded in automation, reproducibility, and security.
  • Data & Storage: Optimize data storage and retrieval strategies, especially around object stores like S3, and support performant, secure APIs.
  • DevOps & Automation: Implement and evolve CI/CD pipelines and observability tooling (logging, monitoring, alerting) with automation-first principles, enabling reliable backend and infrastructure operations.
  • Security & Compliance: Apply strong security principles across infrastructure and application layers, covering authentication/authorization, data protection, and compliance within a cloud-native, IaC-driven environment.
  • Performance & Cost Optimization: Continuously profile, monitor, and optimize backend and infrastructure performance, ensuring scalability and cost-efficiency across deployments.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5–10 years of experience in backend or infrastructure engineering
  • Proven expertise in AWS cloud services (S3, EC2, IAM, CloudWatch, Lambda, etc.)
  • Strong programming skills in languages like TypeScript or Python
  • Deep familiarity with REST APIs, asynchronous systems, and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with and a love of infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Proficiency with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Solid knowledge of database systems (SQL and NoSQL) and distributed system design
  • Mastery of CI/CD systems and deployment automation

Preferred:

  • Experience with serverless architectures or hybrid cloud deployments
  • Exposure to modern observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog)
  • Experience working in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments
  • Comfort with cross-functional collaboration and product-oriented development cycles

Compensation & Benefits

  • $150–200K annual salary
  • Equity
  • Health insurance
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Minimal bureaucracy
  • Awesome teammates
  • Paid parental leave
  • Learning & development budget
  • Remote-friendly organization
  • 401(k)
  • Ownership and autonomy

Lead ML Researcher / Applied Scientist

Job Title: Lead ML Researcher / Applied Scientist

Location: Seattle / Salt Lake City / Remote

Job Type: Full-time

Experience Level: Senior / Principal

Reports To: CTO

About the Role

Flax Health is seeking a Lead Machine Learning Researcher / Applied Scientist to drive our most ambitious AI research and development efforts. This is a unique opportunity to shape the foundational ML breakthroughs that power our production systems. You’ll explore and define new approaches in document understanding, clinical data extraction, multi-modal modeling, and agentic systems—all while working in a high-autonomy, resource-rich environment.

Your work won’t live in an academic silo. At Flax, our research is product-critical: the models you develop and benchmark get deployed directly into our automated workflows, affecting clinical quality, financial performance, and operational efficiency for skilled nursing facilities across the country.

We’re looking for someone entrepreneurial and rigorous—equally comfortable writing novel methods and launching scalable evaluations. If you're energized by publishing research and shipping impactful systems, we’d love to hear from you.

What we offer:

  • An opportunity to lead and shape research from the ground up, with the resources of a well-funded startup (backed by Sorenson Capital and Pear VC), cutting-edge infrastructure, and a world-class engineering team ready to bring ideas to life.
  • Access to rich, real-world healthcare data, enabling applied research with direct, measurable impact on patient care and clinical operations.
  • A foundational role in establishing Flax’s applied research culture, with a clear path toward technical leadership and team-building as the organization scales.
  • True autonomy to chart research direction, influence product decisions, and define the frontier of what’s possible in healthcare ML, from models to deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research Leadership: Own and drive foundational research projects focused on clinical document understanding, NLP, OCR, multimodal data extraction, and representation learning.
  • Benchmarking & Evaluation: Develop and own internal benchmarks (e.g., document OCR accuracy, semantic detail retrieval) that help measure and improve the core intelligence of our agentic systems.
  • Model Development: Design and train novel models for tasks like entity linking, reasoning over longitudinal clinical records, and few-shot generalization across facility types.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Work closely with product engineers and infrastructure teams to bring research into production. Mentor other researchers and grow the ML team over time.
  • Publication & External Presence: Publish in top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ACL, CHIL), represent Flax in the research community, and help establish our thought leadership in AI for healthcare operations.
  • Data Stewardship: Leverage rich, structured and unstructured clinical data—partnering with data and platform teams to guide curation, annotation, and evaluation pipelines.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5–10 years of experience in ML research or applied science roles, preferably with end-to-end ownership of modeling projects.
  • Deep expertise in machine learning, particularly NLP, vision-language models, information extraction, or related fields.
  • Strong publication record or open-source track record.
  • Proficiency with modern ML toolkits (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, Hugging Face).
  • Demonstrated ability to translate research into real-world impact.
  • Experience working with noisy, messy, or domain-specific data (healthcare experience is a plus, but not required).
  • Strong writing and communication skills, including experience publishing and presenting research.
  • Experience building or evaluating agentic systems (e.g., RAG agents, code-generation agents, workflow automation).
  • Experience leading teams or mentoring other scientists.

  • Develop Pipeline: Leverage a mix of inbound leads, outbound campaigns, and network-based referrals to build and maintain a healthy pipeline of qualified opportunities.

  • Strong consultative selling skills, with the ability to build credibility and trust with operators, executives, and clinicians alike.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and closing abilities.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a builder’s mindset—you’re excited to help define the GTM motion from scratch.
